Frequently Asked Questions

Solar Ready Homes

What is a “Solar Ready” new home?

A Solar Ready new home is a home that has been designed to facilitate the installation of certain roof-mounted solar domestic hot water and photovoltaic systems in future. The essentials for solar technologies can be integrated into new construction at minimal cost in the same way that inexpensive conduits for central vacuum systems are roughed-in during construction. Then if the homeowner decides to install solar equipment in future, it will be much easier to do.

Why should I build a “Solar Ready” home?

Building a Solar Ready home means the homeowner will save money if they choose to install solar equipment in the future. It’s a low-cost investment up front and a few simple considerations in the design and construction of your new home make it easy to install solar in the future.

How can I tell if my new home is Solar Ready?

If you’re new home is Solar Ready, there will be a 10 cm x 15 cm green and white Solar Ready sticker on your hot water heater and a smaller than 5 cm x 7.5 cm sticker on the ends of the empty conduits located in the mechanical room. The construction plans for your house will also have the conduit locations identified and will note the proposed location for future solar equipment. If your home received an EnerGuide rating, the Homeowner's Report will indicate the inclusion of the Solar Ready upgrade package.
